Ryan Fox - The Puppet Master Single Review
Ryan Fox is a roots/folk singer-songwriter from Dartford in Kent, drawing inspiration for his songs from musicians such as Joni Mitchell, Donovan and Bob Dylan which you can definitely hear.
This new single, The Puppet Master is from his latest EP ‘The Puppet Master and Other Folk Songs’.
The song starts off with a jovial guitar solo leading quickly into the dark lyrics about the one person in charge of everything and the way that he can control what everyone can and cannot do.
Ryan’s guitar chords in this song do not vary too much which keeps the tune simple and allows you to hear the story within the song.
His soft and gentle voice leads you to a false sense of security as he sings the dark lyrics. Then to drum in the fear of ‘The Puppet Master’ he does this odd effect with his voice when he sing the lyrics “And I run the show”. I personally feel that that drawn out ‘shooooooow’ takes away from the feel of the song as it is rather too intimidating. I was quite happily sitting there enjoying the song and then he scares me a little. I am going to assume that was the intention due to the nature of the song but I feel that it was over done slightly as his voice doesn’t sound quite right when he does it (almost out of tune).
In summary, the tune is simple and very catchy and the lyrics are a bit scary given the current global political situation. Therefore making it a great protest song.
