L-space - Backup Baby Single (+ 2 B-sides) Review
L-space are an Electro Dream Pop band from Scotland consisting of Lily Higham, Gordon Johnstone, Dickson Telfer & Maura Keane. L-space formed back in March 2016 and have been very well received all over Scotland. Their influences range from Radiohead and Massive Attack to Sigur Ros and Philip Glass. Bear in mind that this is the first time I have heard any of their music, so let's find out what L-space are about together.
The single that we are checking out is called 'Backup Baby' but there are also two B-sides that go with it, 'Recycle' and 'Old Machines'.
'Backup Baby' starts off with gentle and distorted guitars with deep, harmonic bass tones. Lily's vocals are very soft with a young an innocent edge. The story in the lyrics is about having a baby to basically be a supply of organs for yourself as you get older. Very dystopian lyrics to accompany the dream pop style music. When you say it like that, it sounds a very strange concept but it works extraordinarily well and it is actually a pleasant song to listen to. This song has a great beat that you find yourself moving to. I can see why this band are gaining fans.
The first of the B-sides is 'Recycle' which again has the very dream-like sound but then it has distorted electronic vocals that tell the story. The second B-side is called 'Old Machines', featuring harmonic, angelic vocals and meditation-like music. This is a very relaxing song but I urge you to listen to the lyrics and not just zone out to the music.
You really must check out this band, they are a very interesting band who have found a niche in the market and are storming the Dream-Pop scene at the moment.
The Single 'Backup Baby' and the accompanying B-sides were released on 25th May 2018 and are available on all digital outlets and on their Bandcamp site.
This single will be part of their forthcoming Album 'Kipple Arcadia' due for release in September 2018 and will be available on vinyl.
