A Night In November - Smug and Pointless EP Review

A Night In November - Smug and Pointless EP Review

A Night In November are a three piece Punk Rock band from Leeds, UK. Consisting of Gareth on Vocals & Bass, Luis on Vocals & Guitar and Costa on Drums & Strange Noises. They cite their influences as early naughties Pop-Punk and modern Post-Hardcore, so let's check out this debut EP.

This four track EP begins with their song 'Halloween' which starts with distorted guitar and fast drumming before the iconic punk-style vocals join in. A great bouncy pop-punk song with catchy lyrics and awesome instrumental sections.
Track two is called 'Keep Dancing (Keep Fighting)' and is a very Blink-182 sounding song, showing just how much they are influenced by the early pop-punk. I really like the vocal harmonies and the way the song changes from a very loud and very fast tempo song to a slow and melodic song for the mid-section.
The third song is 'Cynic' which is a bit darker and more like the Punk music of the 1970's & 80's with shouty vocals and distorted guitar and deep bass tones. The lyrics are very catchy and you find yourself singing along to the chorus... "I wanna be a cynic but my hearts not in it!" (which is similar to a line from Blur's song Country House).
The fourth and final song is called 'You & Me' featuring a nice mix of tempo changes. I really like the fast vocals over the slower music at times during this song, it really adds a nice touch. This song will have you up out of your seat, dancing and singing!

In conclusion, I really like the mix of styles that A Night In November have used in their songs, the fast drumming, distortion effects on the guitar and vocals that fit right into the Punk scene. I have listened to this EP a few times now and it just keeps getting better every time. The lyrics are very easy to pick up and you just can't help singing and shouting along, exactly what Punk is supposed to do!
Definitely check these guys out if you are in the Yorkshire area or maybe they will do a UK tour?

The EP 'Smug and Pointless' will be released on 20th July 2018 on all digital outlets and a limited run of physical copies will be available directly from the band.
